The Direction course at Whistling Woods provides students with the artistic, intellectual, technical and management skills required for a career in the motion picture and television industries, including documentary, music video and advertising filmmaking. The Faculty comprised of highly qualified, working professionals teach through classroom instruction, hands-on workshops and projects providing students all-inclusive production experiences.
Through the co-curricular classes that Direction students undergo, they acquire an in-depth understanding of screenwriting, the grammar and language of motion picture and television, aesthetics, shot breakdown and storyboarding techniques and the business understanding of motion picture making. Film Appreciation sessions and analyses also make them aware of trends in classic and contemporary Indian and world cinema.
Whistling Woods students also have the privilege of being taught by Guest Faculty, consisting of leading professionals from cinema and television. Master Classes held recently include those by Karan Johar, Rajkumar Hirani, Imtiaz Ali, Tarun Mansukhani, Jahnu Barua, Rajkumar Santoshi, Vidya Balan and Nandita Das, to name a few.
Each student gets to direct a short film every semester, and is provided with excellent production back-up and professional equipment. In the words of Ashmaki Acharya, HOD Direction, "Even as we train our students to be professional directors and assistant directors, we also nurture the aesthetic, creative and poetic vision in each of them."
WWI student Avantika Sharma who is working as an Assistant Director on two ongoing films says, "At Whistling Woods, students get an opportunity to hone their skills and explore their capabilities.Earlier a person could learn direction by assisting a director. But, it is not possible today. Times have changed, and so has the technique. With so much improvement and latest development in the technology today, film-making has become a highly specialised job." |
