Programme Overview
The Advanced programme in Film Appreciation renders systematic exposition to the concepts of mise en scene, genre and styles in cinema. The participants will learn the complexity of film language explained in terms of realism, expressionism and other major movements in cinema. Overall a historical perspective will be maintained along with the conceptual discussion on classic examples from world cinema.

Programme Overview
The Advanced Skills of Still Photography programme offers training in commercial and art digital photography that will teach participants theoretical and practical aspects of clicking portraits, landscapes, buildings, objects, etc. The programme will help participants to understand the technical aspects of digital photography with respect to different subjects and will allow them to evaluate the results of the many interpretations created during the programme.

Krishhna Murthy has over 15 feature films to his credit as Director of Photography, including: Jyothi(1979), Patita(1980), Bindiya Chamkegi(1982), Tohfa Mohabbat Ka(1984), Rihayee(1988), Patita Pavani(1990), Raghu More Bachelor of Hearts(2000), Humjo Keh na Paaye(2003), Wajaah(2004).
He also worked as Associate Cameraman in several Hindi feature films including : Jugnu, Nastik, Naya Zamana, Warrant, Yeh Gulistan Hamara, Aazad, Barood.

Programme Overview
A director uses many skills to put a film with the help of her team. They have to have a keen sense of storytelling, a visual sense, some sense of dramaturgy (including working with actors) and a working knowledge of music – to deal with the various rhythms that a film deals with. This programme attempts to introduce participants to some of the basic knowledge that one needs to even understand what a director does. There is, of programme, much more to directing but this programme will give a taste of what a director does.

Editing Skills on FCP is designed to empower you with a toolset of editing skills that renders working with all common editing tasks both efficient and effective. The programme participant progresses through the various editorial processes and acquires an overview of the workflow. After this, they systematically explore individual processes.
On successful completion of the programme the student will be proficient in operating the FCP editing systems and well-prepared for the Level 1 FCP User exam. On qualifying the Level 1 test, the participants become an Apple Certified Professional and gets listed on the Apple website. Programme Head: Prashant Naik & Vivian Pimenta
Prashant Naik: The HOD of the Editing department at Whistling Woods International (WWI). He is a reputed National Award-winning Film Editor. He is also an Apple Certified Trainer in Final Cut Pro.
Prashant specialised in Editing at the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) Pune, in 1991, after completing a graduate degree in Law and a post-graduate degree in Commerce.
He has taught at the FTII, and has been the HOD of the Video Editing Department from 2004-2006.
Prashant’s FTII Diploma film ‘Punaravritti’ received the National Award in the Best Short Fiction category in 1992. In 1997, the Oriya feature film ‘Shunya Swaroopa’ (directed by Himansu Khatua and edited by Prashant Naik) won the National Award in the Best Regional Film category. The film went on to receive 5 State awards and was screened at several international film festivals. In 2005, Prashant won the National Award for Best Editing for the film Harvest of Hunger (directed by Roopashree Nanda) in the Non-feature Film category.
Over the years he has edited a number of corporate films, ad films, promotional films and documentaries and also television series such as ‘Junglee Toofan Tyre Puncture’, ‘Fans’, ‘Life and You (FLU)’ and some episodes of ‘Yule Love Stories’ for Zee TV and several episodes of ‘Surabhi’ for Doordarshan. He was the On-line Editor for the live coverage of the India-Australia Cricket World Cup match at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai, in 1996.
Prashant’s most recent project as Editor is the Hindi feature film I am Kalam (2010, directed by Nila Madhab Panda), which has been screened this year at the Berlin and Cannes film festivals.
Vivian Pimenta : Faculty in the Editing department of Whistling Woods International (WWI), is an Apple Certified Trainer in Final Cut Pro. As faculty, he instructs students on film project workflow, and trains them on Apple Professional Applications.
Earlier, Vivian had been associated with the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Pune, from 2003 to 2006. He was with FTII’s Film Editing department during the significant transition to digitally edited diploma films on the Avid and Apple Final Cut Pro Systems.
He has had a long-standing relation with the industry in the areas of training and support with Avid and Sony Broadcast and Professional.

Programme Overview
The Fundamentals of Film Appreciation programme offers a unique learning experience that will deepen the understanding of films among the participants. The programme is an initiation programme for those participants interested in developing their knowledge of the language and aesthetics of cinema.

Programme Overview
Indians love cinema, no argument. In fact, the Indian Film Industry is arguably the largest ‘Institution of the Imaginary’ in the world. All over the world when there is a hue and cry over Hollywood domination over local film industries, India is still an exception to this. And if one entity gives Indian Cinema its own signature, it is without a doubt the use of song and dance and the navarasas or 9 basic emotions. Unlike Hollywood, where the ‘Musical’ was a separate genre by itself, song and dance have been an integral part of the narrative in Indian Cinema be it in any language or whichever genre – This right from the first Indian Talkie, Alam Ara made in 1931.
Over the years, the Indian film song has evolved and has been developed and perfected to a T. With stunning camerawork, eye-catching locales and sets, colourful costumes and energetic choreography, the Indian film song at times is singularly responsible for the success or failure of a film giving it that so-called ‘repeat value.’
But there is more to Indian cinema than just song and dance and the 9 basic emotions thrown into every film. Indian cinema has seen a dramatic journey from almost a century ago – 1913 to be precise when the first Indian feature film, Dadasaheb Phalke’s Raja Harishcandra premiered and astonished Indian audiences.
From the silent features to the advent of sound. The heydays of the studio systems in the 1930s and 40s which showed that social commitment, art and commerce could go hand in hand and their subsequent decline. From the development of the playback system to the high peaks reached in the golden age of Indian cinema – the 1950s and the early 1960s
From the colourful 60s to the Indian New Wave beginning at the fag end of the 60s with the first lot of FTII graduates entering the Industry and emerging as an alternative cinema throughout the country in the 1970s and 80s.
The advent of the ‘Angry Young Man’ to the ‘NRI’ films of the 1990s and finally to the variety and expansion in all types of filmmaking thanks to technologic advances and the advent of the multiplexes in the 2000s, Indian cinema has seen it all, clinging to its own unique identity.
The programme would take the student down the magical journey tracing the development of the Indian film, looking at its unique traits that sets it apart from its western counterpart, so that we understand our past and place the journey of Indian cinema in a context as we see its evolution and analyse its important movements, see where we stand today and yes, where do we go from here.

Music Foundation Level one provides a student with the absolute fundamentals in music training, with practical approaches in Rhythm, Melody & Harmony, the vital building blocks of musical expression. The programme begins with basic kinaesthetics that leads to a universal physical technique for all instruments. It draws from essential musical practices of different world music styles, such as Afro-cuban, Jazz, Blues & Folk, Western Classical, Indian Classical and popular music.
Students in this programme will begin learning notation in Western and Indian systems, a strong focus on ear-training, practical approaches to improvisation & composition, basics of music theory as it pertains to practical music-making, and how to develop themselves as individually-voiced musical artistes.

Every theoretical component will be delivered to the student via a practical, musical exercise, ensuring complete assimilation of theory. D Wood, Faculty, (School of Music) at Whistling Woods International has been based in India for almost two decades. Born in San Franisco, he is a graduate of the Berklee College of Music, holds an M.A. in World Music and is a recipient of the prestigious Fulbright Fellowship.
He has been a Performer, Sound Designer and Composer for films, including some avant-garde films such as Mani Kaul’s The Idiot (1991) and Dev Benegal’s English August (1994) and has also been a producer and host of radio programmes and television documentaries. He has taught at universities across the U.S.A, including Harvard, MIT and NYU.
As faculty of Music at Whistling Woods International, D Wood works closely with other departments at the institute, especially with Sound Recording & Design (which has in his words, “the best facilities you can ever expect anywhere”). He guide students to listen to various types of music – Indian: classical, folk and film music; and international – classical, folk, jazz, rhythm & blues, Latin American, Asian, African and Traditional World Music. He also teaches about the styles and sounds of musical instruments and how these are used in cinema, and the nuances of music composition for films!

From early in pre-production, the production designer collaborates with the director and director of photography to establish the visual feel and specific aesthetic needs of the project. The production designer guides key personnel in other departments such as the costume designer, the key hair and make-up artists and the locations manager (among others) to establish a unified visual appearance to the film.

Salim Arif
Salim Arif, faculty at WWI, is an alumnus of the National School of Drama (NSD), New Delhi, having specialised in Direction.
He has also researched on the interaction between traditional and contemporary Indian theatre. Beginning as a costume designer on prestigious productions for television such as Shyam Benegal’s ‘Bharat Ek Khoj’, Gulzar’s ‘Mirza Ghalib’, Nirja Guleri’s ‘Chandrakanta’ and Chandraprakash Dwivedi’s ‘Chanakya’ etc., Salim Arif has gone on to be a Film and Stage Designer.
He has worked on films such as Ketan Mehta’s ‘Sardar’ (1993), Gulzar’s ‘Maachis’ (1996) and ‘Hu Tu Tu’ (1999), Govind Nihalani’s ‘Thakshak’ (1999) and Mani Ratnam’s ‘Guru’.
Innovative in his approach, and exploring new contents for staging, he is one of the noted directors of the Hindi theatre scene in India, with numerous plays such as ‘Aapki Soniya’, ‘Kachche Lamhe’, ‘Kharaashein’ and ‘Lakeerein’ and events like Octave 2010 to his credit.
Sabyasachi Bose
Sabyasachi Bose, Faculty in Production Design at WWI, graduated from the Government College of Art and Craft, Kolkata in 1992. In 1994, he began his career in the field of Production Design under the tutelage of Bijon Das Gupta. He then went on to work with Sanjay Dhabade and finally with Samir Chanda.
Sabyasachi has been involved in film projects that include ‘Raja’ (1995), ‘Barsaat’ (1995), ‘Gupt- The Hidden Secret’ (1997), ‘Judaai’ (1997), ‘Chocolate – A Deep Dark Secret’ (2005) and ‘Krrish’ (2006). He has worked as TV serials such as ‘Chandrakanta’, the theatre production, ‘Legend of Rama’, along with shows such as ‘Manikchand Filmfare Awards’, ‘Hum Ek Hai’. He has also contributed to ad shows for companies like Samsung, Onida, BPL, MRF Tyres, Apollo Tyres, Tata, Britannia, Times of India, Anandalok etc.
Simultaneously, as an artist, he has continued to participate in many prestigious group shows such as:

Salim Arif : Salim Arif, faculty at WWI, is an alumnus of the National School of Drama (NSD), New Delhi, having specialised in Direction.
He has also researched on the interaction between traditional and contemporary Indian theatre. Beginning as a costume designer on prestigious productions for television such as Shyam Benegal’s ‘Bharat Ek Khoj’, Gulzar’s ‘Mirza Ghalib’, Nirja Guleri’s ‘Chandrakanta’ and Chandraprakash Dwivedi’s ‘Chanakya’ etc., Salim Arif has gone on to be a Film and Stage Designer.
He has worked on films such as Ketan Mehta’s ‘Sardar’ (1993), Gulzar’s ‘Maachis’ (1996) and ‘Hu Tu Tu’ (1999), Govind Nihalani’s ‘Thakshak’ (1999) and Mani Ratnam’s ‘Guru’.
Innovative in his approach, and exploring new contents for staging, he is one of the noted directors of the Hindi theatre scene in India, with numerous plays such as ‘Aapki Soniya’, ‘Kachche Lamhe’, ‘Kharaashein’ and ‘Lakeerein’ and events like Octave 2010 to his credit.
Sabyasachi Bose: Sabyasachi Bose, Faculty in Production Design at WWI, graduated from the Government College of Art and Craft, Kolkata in 1992. In 1994, he began his career in the field of Production Design under the tutelage of Bijon Das Gupta. He then went on to work with Sanjay Dhabade and finally with Samir Chanda.
Sabyasachi has been involved in film projects that include ‘Raja’ (1995), ‘Barsaat’ (1995), ‘Gupt- The Hidden Secret’ (1997), ‘Judaai’ (1997), ‘Chocolate – A Deep Dark Secret’ (2005) and ‘Krrish’ (2006). He has worked as TV serials such as ‘Chandrakanta’, the theatre production, ‘Legend of Rama’, along with shows such as ‘Manikchand Filmfare Awards’, ‘Hum Ek Hai’. He has also contributed to ad shows for companies like Samsung, Onida, BPL, MRF Tyres, Apollo Tyres, Tata, Britannia, Times of India, Anandalok etc.
Simultaneously, as an artist, he has continued to participate in many prestigious group shows such as:

Programme Overview
The programme on Wing Chun will train you in one of the youngest and most contemporary styles of Kung Fu. Considered to be one of the three great martial art styles of Southern China, it was founded during the Qing Dynasty by a Buddhist nun, Ng Mui, of the famed Shaolin Temple. Ng Mui, one of the top five fighters of the day, aimed at designing a more effective fighting method which did not rely on brute strength to be effective. Wing Chun differed greatly from other Kung Fu styles of the time in its theory, the structure of its movements and means of generating force. It was not based on imitation (such as directly copying animal movements), but on natural, scientific laws, eliminating unnecessary movements to overcome and generate force in the most efficient way. Wing Chun utilises the body’s structure for stability and power, and it emphasises close-range fighting. This makes Wing Chun good for self-defence.
Regular attendance of the Wing Chun programme will teach you how with the movements of one phase of development you can perfectly counter those of another, only to be countered by a third which in turn can be overcome by the first. There is no single Wing Chun technique, which cannot be countered by another.

Vinod Ranganath is a renowned theatre and television professional with a background in theatre in Hindi and English since 27 years and in television for over 16 years.
He has also been actively involved in theatre workshops and plays, in Malayalam.
He has co-directed and acted in the English play ‘A Suitable Bride’, which premiered in 1996 and ran successfully for 50 shows. The film, ‘What’s Your Raashee?’ was based on this play.
Vinod has written close to 2500 episodes on television in the last 16 years. Major works include daily soap operas such as Swabhimaan, Sukanya, Kittie Party and Sarkarr, all co-written with Ms. Shobhaa De. His work also includes; Itihaas, Kartavya, Lekin Yeh Meri Life Hai, Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahi, Agni, Kituu Sab Janti Hai, Kareena-Kareena, Mamta, Aisa Desh Hai Mera, Durgesh Nandini, Main Aisi Kyu Hu, Ghar Ek Sapna, and Dehleez.
Other work on television includes serials; Parivar, Zara Hat Ke, Sea Hawks, Saaya, Waaris, Milan, Aandhi, Tiger and Force One.
Vinod Ranganath has written the story and screenplay of the Hindi feature film, ‘Mil Gayee Manzil Mujhe’. He also wrote the story, screenplay and dialogue of ‘Mast’, the screenplay of the Malayalam film, ‘Millennium Stars’ , the screenplay for the Hindi Film ‘Ishq-Vishq’.

Indian Cinema – Bollywood Snapshots is a short theoretical and practical course that will introduce international students to the cultural context, styles and characteristics of Hindi cinema and to film production in Mumbai.
Objectives:
- Develop an insight of historical and cultural contexts of both commercial and parallel Indian cinemas through 16 hours of lectures and screenings
- Familiarize participants with filmmaking equipments and techniques through approximately 60 hours of lectures in Direction, Production, Editing and Cinematography

Whistling Woods collaborates regularly on student co-productions with a variety of film & media schools, such as Tisch Asia (Singapore), University of Hertfordshire, Leeds University (UK), Columbia Film School, Victoria School of Arts (Canada), University of Calgary (Canada) and several others.
Street, Documentary, Travel Or Lifestyle Photography
The Whistling Woods Cinematography Department leads short courses in digital and analogue photography, putting to use the Institute’s darkroom and studio facilities.
Cinematography Digital & Film
The Whistling Woods Cinematography Department develops focused workshops around mastering the art of painting with light through camera techniques, the use of state-of-the-art lights, cranes and HD, Film & 3D cameras.
3D Filmmaking From The Sony Media & Technology Center
The Sony Media & Technology Center at Whistling Woods offers training to students on the complete 3D Cinematography Workflow within the US$5 million facilities at the WWI campus.
AURO 3D
Auro-3D is an immersive 3D audio format. It is designed along three layers of sound (surround, height and overhead ceiling), building on the single horizontal layer used in the 5.1 sound format. Auro-3D creates a spatial sound field by adding a height layer around the audience on top of the traditional 2D surround sound system. We can also have workshops for instruction in this technology.
Screenwriting-focus Workshops & Labs
The Whistling Woods Screenwriting Department, headed by Anjum Rajabali, lead focused screenwriting workshops & creative labs around the world. Previous initiatives include the Mumbai Mantra Sundance Institute’s Screenwriters Lab, SAFF Cananda and the IndoGerman Film Week Initiative.
Claymation, Stopmotion Or 2D/3D Animation Workshops
The Whistling Woods School of Animation has collaborated with the Photography Department of Bradford College (UK) on a stop-motion co-production called ‘Music of Life’ which premiered at the Bradford Animation Film Festival and went on to win several film festival accolades.
Sound Recording & Design Including Music Composition & Recording
The Whistling Woods Sound Recording & Design Department Designs courses that utilize campus facilities like the Music Recording Studio, the Dolby Digital Film Surround Mix Studio, Digital Audio Workstation Suites, ADR Suites, and location sound recording equipment.
Acting For Screen/Theater
Noted Indian theater director & Head of the Whistling Woods Actors’ Studio, Shernaz Patel leads short courses on acting for Theater or Screen, with a component on film or stage performance.

Overview
Shoot-a-Song in Bollywood is a short practical course that will introduce international students to the complexities of shooting a Bollywood song sequence. Upon request, the course can be combined with lectures in Hindi cinema, set visits and screenings.

- Explore different ways of visually expressing music and lyrics
- Experience working with choreographers and dancers
