February 20–21, 2024: Guest Workshop with our Alumni Trishai Somani on Sound Design with the Department of Media and Communications

Day 1: To theoretically and practically explain the basic sound setup needed in any essentially media format, the use of each equipment, necessity for every wire, and approximate rental costs in the current market, detailed explanation of microphones which would include lapels, condensers, and a dynamic mic. I would also breakdown the job of a sound designer and a location recordist, explain the basic principles of sound, as well as mentioned my top sound designers locally and internationally, and speak about their work and why they are so renowned in their respective fields. The difference between a music composer, a music director, and a sound designer and their necessity to work closely on projects. Before lunch, I will have a briefing on the Zoom H4N recorder and how to use it, followed by an exercise after lunch where I ask all students to record ambiences and interesting sounds on campus, after which they return to class by 3:30, return all the equipment, and learn data storage and management, which marks the end of Day 1.

Day 2: We start the day on a light note, speaking about the aesthetics of sound and the importance of it in filmmaking and media, accompanied by Youtube videos on the same, moving onto my favorite short films, which will all be viewed and critically analyzed by the class until lunch. After lunch, we analyze all the sounds recorded by the students the previous day and understand the concept of signal-to-noise ratio and where they can improve on their recordings. We end the workshop with a recollection with the students and their take on what they feel about Sound in the media platform, where they think this workshop would be relevant to them in their recent future, and why understanding the use of equipment and budget is important to them.
